11 Dead, 16 Injured as Two Vehicles Collide and Burst into Flames
On Friday, 11 people lost their lives and 16 were injured following a tragic accident involving a passenger bus and a mini pick-up at Gaya junction along the Kano-Maiduguri road. The crash occurred in the afternoon, resulting in a fiery scene as both vehicles burst into flames after a head-on collision.
The Kano State Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander, Ibrahim Sallau-Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday. The command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Labaran, detailed that the two vehicles—a Toyota Hummer bus with registration number KTG 190 XB and a Hijet mini pick-up with registration number KTG 501 YG—collided due to speeding and loss of control by the drivers.
The FRSC responded quickly to the emergency, dispatching personnel to the scene within 10 minutes of receiving the call. The sector commander noted that the accident involved a total of 28 passengers across the two vehicles, with 11 people losing their lives on the spot, 16 others sustaining serious injuries, and one person rescued unharmed.
The injured were rushed to Gaya General Hospital for urgent medical treatment, while the deceased were laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony. This incident has prompted the FRSC to renew its calls for strict adherence to road safety rules and regulations, emphasizing the dangers of speeding and overloading.
Sector Commander Sallau-Abdullahi urged commercial drivers to install speed limit devices in their vehicles to prevent crashes resulting from speed limit violations. He also reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations to ensure the safety of road users, vowing to intensify efforts to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
