10% of Wesley University’s Top Graduates Are Deaf, Says Vice Chancellor
Wesley University, Ondo, has set a significant milestone in inclusive education, with 10% of its best graduating students for the 2023/2024 academic session being deaf scholars. The announcement was made by the Vice Chancellor, Rt. Rev. Prof. Sunday Samuel Obeka, during a press briefing ahead of the university’s 13th convocation ceremony scheduled for this weekend.
Prof. Obeka revealed that 39 students achieved first-class honors this year, with several deaf students among them. He commended the university’s inclusive education system, which accommodates students with disabilities and equips them to excel in various disciplines. Among the graduating class of 230 students, eight deaf scholars have demonstrated exceptional academic performance, specializing in fields such as computer science, law, and social services.
The Vice Chancellor highlighted Wesley University’s ongoing collaboration with Gallaudet University, Washington D.C., a global leader in deaf education, to further enhance opportunities for deaf students. The university also boasts a Directorate of Deaf and Special Needs Education, which supports the empowerment of the deaf community and provides employment opportunities for deaf scholars.
Prof. Obeka called on the federal government to extend financial support to private universities, particularly those with medical colleges. He emphasized the need for government assistance in addressing salary and infrastructure demands, especially in programs designed to tackle Nigeria’s healthcare challenges. Wesley University offers a range of medical and allied health sciences programs, including pharmacy, medicine and surgery, physiology, and physiotherapy.
The Vice Chancellor also highlighted partnerships with international institutions like Cliff College, which has enriched the university’s theological education programs up to the Ph.D. level.
The 13th convocation events will include a lecture by Evangelist Sunday Ogwuche on Friday, November 22, followed by the degree conferment and awards ceremony on Saturday, November 23, and a thanksgiving service on Sunday, November 24. The ceremonies will also honor distinguished scholars, entrepreneurs, and prominent personalities.
Prof. Obeka reaffirmed the university’s dedication to delivering world-class education supported by modern infrastructure and a nurturing learning environment.
