Xavi Announces Departure from Barcelona at Season’s End
Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has officially declared his decision to leave the club at the end of the current season. The announcement follows Barcelona’s 5-3 defeat at home to Villarreal, a match that saw them relinquish a 3-2 lead with the concession of two stoppage-time goals.
Addressing the media in a press conference, the 44-year-old manager expressed that the current situation at Barcelona “needs to change” and emphasized that he has reached a point of no return. Xavi stated, “I will leave Barcelona in June,” revealing that the decision had been made a few days ago, but he chose to announce it following the recent match.
“I don’t want to be a problem for the club, and the best thing is to leave after June. I was the solution two years ago, but now leaving is the best option,” Xavi explained. He further emphasized that his departure is in the best interest of the club, stating, “This club needs a change of dynamic. Leaving Barça is the best decision possible for all parties involved.”
Despite the disappointment, Xavi remains optimistic about the remainder of the season, asserting, “I think that we can still have a good season in my last four months here.” However, he confirmed that he will take a break after the season to spend time with his family, citing the challenges they’ve faced in recent years.
Acknowledging the shock that his decision may bring to the squad, who have consistently supported him, Xavi’s departure marks the beginning of a search for his successor. His current contract, originally set to expire in 2025, adds urgency to the quest for a new leader before the end of the current campaign.
Xavi, a legendary figure at Barcelona both as a player and a manager, returned to the club in November 2021. While his first season as manager saw success with LaLiga and Supercopa de Espana victories, this season has been marred by inconsistent performances. Barcelona currently sits in third place in LaLiga, trailing leaders Real Madrid by ten points, and faced an early exit from the Copa del Rey at the hands of Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals. The upcoming months will undoubtedly be crucial for the Catalan club as they navigate these major changes in leadership.
