X Introduces $1 Annual Subscription for New and Unverified Users to Combat Spam and Bots
X, formerly known as Twitter, has unveiled a new program aimed at new and unverified users, requiring them to pay a $1 annual subscription fee for sign-up. The announcement came through a statement released on the support account of the renowned social media platform today, October 18.
X has initiated a testing phase for this program, which is currently underway in New Zealand and the Philippines. This trial will grant new accounts the ability to post and engage with other users.
The official statement from X explains, “Starting today, we’re testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines. New, unverified accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription to be able to post & interact with other posts. Within this test, existing users are not affected.”
The primary objective of this new program is to reinforce X’s ongoing efforts to combat spam, prevent platform manipulation, and mitigate bot activity. It’s worth noting that the $1 subscription fee is not a profit-seeking initiative but rather a method to strike a balance between maintaining platform accessibility and implementing measures to reduce undesirable activity. As stated in the announcement, “subscription options have proven to be the main solution that works at scale.”
In a tweet made by Elon Musk, Chairman of X, he shed light on the rationale behind introducing the annual subscription fee. Musk emphasized that the fee serves as a deterrent to spam and automated bot accounts, stating, “Correct, read for free, but $1/year to write. It’s the only way to fight bots without blocking real users. This won’t stop bots completely, but it will be 1000X harder to manipulate the platform.”
This move by X represents a strategic step towards maintaining the integrity of its platform and ensuring a better user experience, particularly in the face of growing challenges related to spam and manipulation. The results of this testing phase in New Zealand and the Philippines will likely guide X in its future approach to handling new and unverified users.
