ISIS Claims Responsibility for Brussels Shooting Targeting Swedes, Gives Reason
The Islamic State group has asserted responsibility for a fatal shooting in Brussels, Belgium, which claimed the lives of two Swedish nationals. The assailant cited Sweden’s involvement in the global coalition combatting jihadist groups as the primary motive behind the attack.
The terrorist organization announced their involvement in a statement released via their news outlet, Amaq, stating, “An Islamic State fighter carried out an attack against” Swedish nationals on Monday. They emphasized that this act was part of the broader campaign orchestrated by the Islamic State, urging its followers to target citizens of coalition countries.
The attacker, identified as Abdesalem Lassoued, a 45-year-old Tunisian migrant residing illegally in Belgium, unleashed a hail of bullets on a street just before the commencement of a Belgium-Sweden international football match. Tragically, two Swedes lost their lives, and a third suffered injuries during the brutal assault.
Law enforcement swiftly moved to corner the assailant, resulting in his fatal injury during a confrontation at a local café early the following Tuesday.
Disturbingly, it was revealed that the attacker had served a prison sentence in Sweden from 2012 to 2014, further underscoring his connection to the country.
In a chilling social media post after the attack, the gunman proudly claimed inspiration from the Islamic State group.
The Swedish foreign ministry has identified the victims as a man in his 70s from the Stockholm region and another man in his 60s living abroad. The injured Swede, a man in his 70s, is currently receiving medical care.
In response to this tragic incident, the Swedish foreign ministry has advised its citizens abroad to exercise increased caution and remain vigilant.
Sweden is among the many nations participating in the Global Coalition against Daesh, a coalition formed in 2014 to combat the Islamic State and its expansion after it seized vast territories in Iraq and Syria.
This event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing global struggle against terrorism and the persistent threat posed by groups like the Islamic State.
