World Cup Qualifier: Benin Republic Defeats Super Eagles for First Time
In a historic upset, the Super Eagles of Nigeria were defeated 1-2 by Benin Republic on Monday. This loss marks the first time in history that Nigeria has been bested by Benin in a World Cup qualifier, casting serious doubts on Nigeria’s chances of making it to the next tournament.
Nigeria currently sits precariously with only three points from four World Cup qualification games, putting their World Cup hopes in jeopardy. The Super Eagles entered the match needing a victory following a recent draw with South Africa.
The game began positively for Nigeria, who took the lead 25 minutes in when Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge scored from just inside the box. However, the Cheetahs of Benin, managed by former Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr, responded with two goals before halftime, securing their 2-1 lead.
Despite efforts in the second half, no further goals were scored. The match concluded after five minutes of added time, with Gabonese referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho blowing the final whistle.
The Super Eagles’ next matches are scheduled for March 2025, where they will travel to Kigali to face Rwanda and then host Zimbabwe.
