NFF to Hire Foreign Technical Adviser for Super Eagles
In response to the Super Eagles’ disappointing performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided to hire an expatriate Technical Adviser for the team. This decision comes as the NFF aims to revamp the squad ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the remaining World Cup qualifying fixtures.
During a hybrid meeting on June 12, 2024, the NFF board agreed to this significant change, which will see the new Technical Adviser working directly above Finidi George, who was appointed as the Super Eagles’ head coach in April. George had previously served as an assistant to Jose Peseiro, whose contract ended in February. George’s performance in his initial competitive matches has drawn public criticism, prompting the NFF’s latest move.
Additionally, the NFF plans to enhance its Technical Department with more qualified personnel and restructure its technical and development sub-committee immediately. The board also expressed dissatisfaction with some Super Eagles players’ commitment to national duties and announced plans for a more extensive scouting program to identify talented Nigeria-eligible players worldwide.
In a communique issued after the meeting, the NFF Executive Committee apologized to Nigerians for the team’s poor results in the World Cup qualifiers and pledged to implement measures to ensure a better-prepared squad for the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September and the World Cup qualifiers resuming in March 2025.
Despite the challenges faced during the preparation for recent World Cup qualifying matches, including a 38-hour nationwide industrial action, the NFF is committed to improving the Super Eagles’ performance and overall team quality.
