JUST IN: Finidi George Resigns as Super Eagles Coach
Finidi George has stepped down as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles following a series of disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The former Ajax Amsterdam forward confirmed his resignation to Channels Television, stating, “Yes, it is true. I have resigned.”
Finidi’s resignation comes on the heels of a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo and a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in Abidjan, outcomes that have jeopardized Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup. These results extended the team’s winless streak in the qualifiers, a situation that had already sparked widespread calls for his dismissal from frustrated fans.
Finidi took over the coaching duties after Jose Peseiro’s contract ended in February, having previously served as Peseiro’s assistant for 20 months. However, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) recently decided to appoint a foreign coach to oversee him, despite his appointment as head coach in May. This decision reportedly included a significant reduction in his salary and the replacement of his handpicked assistants.
The NFF has yet to issue an official statement regarding Finidi’s resignation.
