FIFA Sanctions Nigeria and DR Congo Over World Cup Qualifier Incidents
FIFA has issued disciplinary sanctions against the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Congolese Football Association following incidents during their 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
According to FIFA’s disciplinary report, separate violations occurred during the fixture played on November 16, 2025.
Nigeria was fined 1,000 Swiss Francs for a breach related to order and security at the match, specifically involving spectators throwing objects. The ruling cites Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The DR Congo Football Association faced a higher fine of 5,000 Swiss Francs after supporters used laser pointers and similar devices, violating Article 17.2.d of the code.
FIFA noted that these decisions are based on the circumstances of each case and remain subject to appeal. The public summary serves to inform the media, while official communications are sent directly to the federations involved.
The match between Nigeria and DR Congo drew attention after Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes ended in a penalty shootout loss during the African play-offs. Following the defeat, the NFF lodged a formal protest questioning the eligibility of several DR Congo players.
Nigeria’s challenge focuses on DR Congo’s domestic law, which does not recognize dual citizenship for adults, raising concerns over players holding European passports while representing the Leopards. NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi expressed the federation’s concerns that FIFA may have cleared ineligible players.
Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, urged caution, emphasizing that FIFA has not yet issued a final decision on Nigeria’s petition. He noted that DR Congo’s appearance on the intercontinental play-off fixture list does not indicate a ruling has been made.
“The FIFA we all know has channels to communicate sensitive decisions directly to the parties involved,” Mr. Dikko said. “For now, we remain hopeful that Nigeria’s eligibility concerns will be addressed, allowing the Super Eagles a chance at the playoff and potentially the World Cup.”
DR Congo is currently listed among the six nations preparing for the intercontinental play-offs as the race for the final 2026 FIFA World Cup spots continues.
