Woman Swept Away by Flood in Anambra Found Dead in River

A tragic incident occurred in Nnewichi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, where the body of a woman who was swept away by floodwaters during a heavy downpour was recovered from a nearby river.

The victim, identified as Uchechukwu Nwizu, was reportedly trying to leave her residence on a motorcycle around 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, when she was caught in the raging flood. Eyewitnesses said the strong current swept both her and the motorcycle away as soon as she stepped out of the gate.

Residents said that despite efforts to save her, the force of the water made it impossible. After the rain subsided, neighbours, relatives, and community members formed a search party to locate her. Sadly, her lifeless body was later discovered floating in a river in a neighbouring community.

“It was a horrific sight,” a resident told Punch. “She was shouting for help as the flood carried her away. From what we gathered, she was on her way to her place of business when it happened.”

A video circulating on social media shows the deceased’s body floating in the river while members of the search and rescue team worked to retrieve it.
