Woman Faces Over 50-Year Sentence for Beating, Starving 5-Year-Old Son to Death

Danielle Dauphinais, 38, is expected in court this Friday to face sentencing for the tragic death of her 5-year-old son, Elijah Lewis. Dauphinais has pleaded guilty to charges including second-degree murder after prosecutors linked her to the severe abuse and neglect that led to Elijah’s death in 2021. Her sentencing could see her imprisoned for more than 50 years.

The grim details surrounding Elijah’s death paint a heartbreaking picture. Authorities discovered his remains buried in a Massachusetts park, weighing only 19 pounds at the time, with evidence of malnutrition, neglect, and drug exposure. An autopsy revealed that Elijah suffered from facial injuries, scalp trauma, and pressure ulcers, with traces of fentanyl in his system.

Dauphinais, along with her boyfriend, Joseph Stapf, exchanged disturbing text messages prior to the child’s death, expressing anger and frustration with Elijah’s behavior. In one message, Dauphinais wrote, “He said he wants food and he wants me to stop starving him because it’s not nice,” adding in another text, “I’m gonna kill him and I mean it.” Stapf responded in messages, urging her to feed Elijah more to “fatten him up.” Stapf has already been sentenced to 22 to 45 years after pleading guilty to related charges.

The boy’s father, Timothy Lewis, had initially entrusted Elijah to Dauphinais’s care in New Hampshire in 2020 but grew concerned when he noticed bruises and signs of neglect. According to court documents, Lewis contacted child services, though the intervention seemingly fell short.

The investigation revealed Dauphinais had repeatedly misled child services, at one point claiming Elijah was staying with family in California, which later proved false. By October 2021, when Dauphinais gave birth to another child, who also showed signs of drug exposure, child services began to investigate Elijah’s whereabouts. Shortly afterward, Dauphinais and Stapf were arrested in New York, leading police to the discovery of Elijah’s remains in the Massachusetts park.
