Nigerian Man Jailed 28 Years in UK for Child Sexual Abuse

A UK court has sentenced Nigerian national Anthony Adewale Sobogun to 28 years in prison after he was convicted of multiple sexual offences against two children.

The sentence was handed down on Wednesday at Inner London Crown Court, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police into what authorities described as a prolonged pattern of abuse spanning more than 15 years.

Sobogun, 61, was found guilty of 17 counts of non-recent sexual offences. The crimes, which occurred between the 1990s and early 2000s, involved repeated sexual abuse of two victims known to him. Prosecutors said the offences included multiple incidents of sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13, as well as the rape of a child.

According to police, the case was built through a detailed review of historical evidence. One of the victims told investigators that Sobogun had taken her to an abortion clinic after she became pregnant. Detectives later confirmed the account by tracing medical records. Counselling notes examined during the investigation also documented a sustained pattern of abuse.

Sobogun was arrested in July 2025 and subsequently charged with several sexual offences before being convicted in court.

Detective Constable Charlotte Lockyer, who led the investigation, said the case depended heavily on the willingness of the victims to come forward.

“The bravery of the victims in coming forward is what brought Sobogun to justice,” she said, adding that their cooperation helped prevent further harm.

In statements presented to the court, the victims described the abuse as deeply traumatic and urged others in similar situations to speak out. They noted that such cases often remain hidden due to fear, stigma, and silence, and stressed that victims deserve to be heard and supported regardless of when the abuse occurred.

Authorities said the outcome underscores that historical sexual abuse cases can still be successfully prosecuted when evidence is established.
