Wike Takes Tough Stance: N50k for Individuals, N100k for Corporates in Abuja C-of-O Recertification Drive

In a recent directive, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called upon Abuja landowners to undergo recertification of their existing Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O). Wike announced this initiative during a media briefing on Friday, emphasizing the importance of enhancing security measures and curbing suspected racketeering in the issuance of C-of-Os to mass housing estate developers.

Wike revealed that the recertification process would entail linking the owner’s National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) to their C-of-O. He expressed concern about discrepancies and cloning of C-of-Os, stating that the move aims to address these issues and improve overall security.

The Minister, who had earlier inaugurated a committee on November 15 to investigate the issuance of C-of-O for mass housing and the recovery of land use contravention fees, highlighted the need for stringent measures. Wike disclosed that, since assuming office, he refrained from signing C-of-Os, awaiting the introduction of enhanced security measures in the issuance process.

Individuals seeking recertification will incur a cost of N50,000, while corporate bodies will be required to pay N100,000. Wike clarified that this fee is applicable for recertification and emphasized that those who previously obtained a C-of-O won’t need to pay again. The incorporation of NIN or BVN is seen as a vital step to ensure accountability and minimize irregularities in the system.

Wike explained, “It helps in terms of security; it also helps to improve our revenue generation.” The move is part of ongoing efforts to streamline the process, deter malpractices, and bolster the security and efficiency of land ownership documentation in the Federal Capital Territory.
