Wike Has No Influence in PDP, Can’t Stop Peter Obi, Says Party Chieftain Jacob Mark
A former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jacob Mark, has dismissed claims that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, controls the party or can block the return of former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Mark emphasized that Wike’s influence in the PDP is overstated, and that the former governor of Rivers State is virtually unknown in many PDP structures across the country. He asserted that Wike has not participated in any party activity or meeting for over a year and cannot be considered a functioning member of the PDP.
“Wike is not a member of the PDP. He hasn’t attended any PDP meeting in over a year,” Mark said. “When people say he is in charge, it worries me. That narrative is lazy and not based on any real investigation.”
Mark noted that PDP state structures, particularly in the North, operate independently and without input or interference from Wike. He cited the recent state caucus meeting in Kaduna, held to prepare for a federal constituency bye-election, as an example of how PDP continues its internal processes without any connection to Wike.
“He has zero influence in Kaduna as far as PDP is concerned,” Mark stated. “When people claim Wike runs PDP, I wonder what they mean. Is it because he has friends in the National Working Committee, or because some individuals in Abuja are doing his bidding? His power is being exaggerated.”
Mark also questioned Wike’s commitment to the party, pointing out that the minister has publicly supported candidates from rival parties against the PDP and has made no contribution to its activities in the last year. He argued that such behavior is inconsistent with that of a loyal party member.
According to Mark, efforts are underway to rebuild and reposition the PDP as a formidable opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. He said the departure of some party members, including those he considers obstacles to internal progress, has allowed new leaders to emerge.
“We are glad some people have left,” he said. “Their exit has created room for growth and opened opportunities for others to lead. The PDP is regrouping, and soon Nigerians will see a more vibrant political party.”
He added that the PDP must embrace new leadership and avoid recycling figures who have long outstayed their relevance. “Some people refuse to retire and continue to block progress. The future of PDP lies in fresh ideas and younger leaders.”
Mark concluded by reiterating that Wike’s role in Abuja may have local relevance but holds no weight in the broader structure of the PDP nationwide. “In many states—Benue, Plateau, Kaduna—Wike is unknown. So if Peter Obi wants to return to the PDP, he should not worry about Wike. He has no influence where it matters.”
