Why We Left PDP for APC – Kebbi Senators Explain Defection
In a significant political shift, three senators from Kebbi State have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing disillusionment with the PDP’s direction and a desire to better serve their constituents. Senators Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) announced their defections during Tuesday’s plenary session of the Senate.
The announcements were made through separate letters addressed to the President of the Senate and read out by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session. The senators expressed similar sentiments, noting that the PDP had lost touch with the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
Senator Aliero, in his letter, stated that his decision followed deep reflection, extensive consultations, and a clear-eyed assessment of the current political and socio-economic landscape. He explained that although he had proudly served under the PDP, his loyalty ultimately lay with the people he represents and the progress they seek.
“This decision was not made lightly. I’ve been a proud member of the PDP, a party under whose platform I was elected to serve,” Aliero wrote. “However, politics must never be about personal loyalty to a platform; it will always be about service, solutions and results.”
According to him, internal divisions, ideological confusion, and the lack of a credible forward-looking agenda within the PDP had made it difficult to push for meaningful reforms. He said these shortcomings prompted his decision to rejoin the APC, which he described as a party undergoing positive transformation, especially under the “Renewed Hope” agenda.
Aliero emphasized that the move was not for personal benefit but a step towards aligning with a political platform that could better enable him to deliver on his commitments. “Nigeria must move forward and today, I move forward with the people, for the people, and in the interest of our shared future,” he concluded.
