Why We Dislodged Hunters from Emir Sanusi’s Palace – Police
In a move to enhance security at the two palaces embroiled in the Kano Emirate succession dispute, the police have confirmed the deployment of additional officers. The palaces are currently occupied by the two rival princes, Emir Sanusi and Emir Ado-Bayero.
According to reports, police have taken over security responsibilities at the main palace, previously guarded by local hunters known as ‘Yan Tauri’. These hunters, appointed by the state government, were removed amidst rumors of federal plans to relocate Aminu Ado-Bayero to the main palace. Ado-Bayero, ousted by the state government last month, is now residing at the Nasarawa mini palace.
Outgoing Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, explained the need for the enhanced security measures during a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday. He emphasized that the deployment is a response to potential security threats and will remain in place until the emirship dispute is resolved.
“Armed personnel have been deployed to provide security at the Kofar Kudu Palace, the residence of Emir Malam Mohammadu Sanusi, and the Nasarawa Mini Palace, the residence of Emir Aminu Bayero,” Mr. Gumel stated. He appealed to the public for support and encouraged residents to provide any information that could help maintain peace and stability.
The police command remains committed to ensuring the security of all residents, enabling them to carry out their daily activities without fear for their safety or property.
This development follows a ruling by the Federal High Court, which voided the reappointment of Mr. Sanusi. The court ordered the state government to halt the implementation of the Kano Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024, citing disobedience of an earlier order to refrain from further action on the new law. Judge Abdullahi Liman declared the reappointment null and void due to the government’s failure to comply with the court’s directive.
