Why Speed Darlington Is Still in Detention: Lawyer Reveals the Real Reason
Speed Darlington remains in detention three weeks after his arrest on November 27 during a performance in Owerri, Imo State, sparking public speculation. His lawyer, Stan Alieke of Law Capitol, has revealed the reasons behind the delay in his client’s release, shedding light on the legal complications and influence of high-profile individuals involved in the case.
Darlington’s detention stems from allegations of cyberstalking Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy. His legal team, including Deji Adeyanju and Mr. Alieke, has described the situation as an unjustified abuse of power. Speaking on the case, Mr. Alieke disclosed that Darlington has been charged to court, with a hearing set for January 14, 2025. However, his team is determined to secure his release before the court’s recess, ensuring he does not spend the festive season in detention.
The lawyer attributed the delay to the influence of powerful figures connected to the complainant, Burna Boy. “The prolonged detention is due to the involvement of bigwigs,” Mr. Alieke stated, adding that the arrest appeared arbitrary and influenced by the complainant’s status. He reiterated that the case, rooted in alleged defamation, is a civil matter and not within the police’s jurisdiction.
“Defamation is not a criminal offense,” he explained, criticizing the police for overstepping their authority. “The police have no role in this matter. If Burna Boy believes he was defamed, he should pursue a civil suit in court.”
Despite these challenges, Mr. Alieke expressed confidence in resolving the case soon. He noted that while the court may not convene immediately, the police have the authority to grant administrative bail, which his team is actively pursuing. He assured the public that Darlington would be released by Friday, December 20, at the latest.
Responding to criticisms that his team had not done enough for their client, Mr. Alieke defended their efforts, stating that his staff had been actively working to secure Darlington’s release. “As lawyers, we have gone the extra mile to address this situation. Nobody can fairly claim we have neglected our duties,” he said.
The legal battle began in October 2024, when Darlington was first arrested for allegedly cyberstalking Burna Boy. The feud escalated after Darlington released a diss track, Baby Oil, mocking Burna Boy and demanding an apology and compensation. Following his initial release on bail, Darlington resumed public criticism of Burna Boy, which ultimately led to his second arrest in November.
As the case now rests with the Federal High Court in Abuja, Darlington’s legal team remains focused on challenging the police’s actions and securing his freedom.
