Why Rivers State Government Demolished Assembly Complex: Official Explanation Unveiled

In a decisive move, the Rivers State Government, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, commenced the demolition of the State House of Assembly Complex today at approximately 6:45 am. This action comes two months after a destructive fire swept through the chambers, prompting the government to take drastic measures.

The government justified the demolition by revealing that consultants had advised against further use of the deteriorating structure, deeming it uninhabitable. The decision was also influenced by the recent fire incident, which heightened concerns about the complex’s safety. Joe Johnson, the Commissioner for Information, shared these insights during the sideline discussion at the presentation of the 2024 budget at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Despite the security measures in place, the demolition proceeded smoothly, with Governor Fubara leading a convoy of around 10 bulldozers onto the Assembly premises. The operation, executed with precision, aimed to strengthen the longstanding complex and address the pressing need for renovation.

Security along Moscow road was intensified, reminiscent of the previous incident on October 30 when tear gas was deployed against the governor. However, this time, foot traffic was permitted while the road was blocked off to vehicles. Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, has scheduled a security meeting at the Command headquarters with a briefing expected later today.

Notably, the presentation of the N800 billion 2024 budget estimates by Governor Fubara took place simultaneously at the Government House. This move was necessitated by the ongoing “renovation” work at the state assembly complex, signaling the government’s commitment to a swift resolution of the reconstruction project. Edison Ehie, recognized by the court as the Speaker of the House, received the budget presentation, while Martins Amaewhule was restrained by the court from parading himself as the speaker.
