Abia Man Takes His Own Life Allegedly After Losing N2.5m to Betting
In a heartbreaking incident in Umuahia, Abia state, a middle-aged man identified as Onoh Chukwuma Richard has reportedly committed suicide after facing financial challenges, particularly losing N2.5 million to betting.
Richard, who was an aspiring politician and associated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia state, posted a distressing message on Facebook on Tuesday, declaring it his “last day on earth.” In a subsequent live video, he remained silent, unaware to his followers that he had already ingested a poisonous substance.
Friends, alarmed by his suicidal post, rushed him to Madonna Hospital, Umuahia, where he sadly passed away. It has been revealed that Richard struggled with financial difficulties, having reportedly borrowed money for betting and lacked the courage to face those he owed.
One of his friends expressed shock and grief on Facebook, saying, “U had 1m and borrowed 1.5m to play bet, it failed, cuz of the shame from debtors you took your life? Onoh who taught you this?”
Condolences have been pouring in on Richard’s Facebook page, reflecting the shock and sadness of his network. As of now, Geoffrey Ogbonna, the spokesperson of the Abia state police, has not yet released a statement on the matter. The community mourns the loss of a young life amidst the challenges he faced.
