“Why I donated N200 million for education within one week.” – Peter Obi
Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, announced that he donated over N200 million within a single week to support educational initiatives across Nigeria. He made this statement during the 70th anniversary celebration of Queen’s School Enugu, organized by the Queen’s School Old Girls Association (QSEOGA) on Saturday.
Obi detailed his recent visits to various educational institutions, stating, “On Monday, I was in Onitsha where a new university is being established. From there, I visited Borromeo College of Nursing. On Tuesday, I went to Anyigba in Kogi State to attend to the needs of students, and on Thursday, I was at an Almajiri school in Kaduna.”
Emphasizing the significance of investing in education, Obi stated that no country could succeed without prioritizing this sector. He expressed his commitment to securing a brighter future for the younger generation and discouraging them from engaging in crime.
At the event, Obi expressed concern over the current state of Queen’s School Enugu, which has produced many notable individuals but has suffered from neglect. He called on alumni and stakeholders to unite in restoring the school’s former glory, urging them to “pull your resources together toward rebuilding this school.”
Mrs. Ifeanyi Egbunike, the National President of QSEOGA, highlighted the need for improved infrastructure at the school, stating, “Many things have gone wrong with the school.” She emphasized that the alumni must collaborate to uplift the institution.
The Chairperson of the Enugu Chapter of QSEOGA, Mrs. Maureen Atuonwu, noted that the school, established on October 4, 1954, has produced many successful professionals and that the association is committed to its revitalization. She affirmed, “We have come together to discuss ways of rebuilding this school, as the government alone cannot do it.”
Obi pledged to partner with the association in efforts to enhance the school’s facilities, ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from the quality education that Queen’s School Enugu once provided.
