“Why I Chose Dialogue with Bandits as Zamfara Governor” – Minister Matawalle
In a recent interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, addressed the controversy surrounding his past decision to engage in dialogue with bandits during his tenure as Governor of Zamfara State. Matawalle, who has been accused of sponsoring banditry, strongly denied the allegations and clarified that his decision was influenced by the advice of state residents and local stakeholders.
Matawalle explained that upon assuming office, he sought counsel from various community leaders and security agencies, all of whom recommended dialogue as the most viable strategy to curb the violence ravaging Zamfara. “When I became governor, I looked at the situation—why were bandits killing people? I received advice from different sectors and called for a meeting of all stakeholders,” he said.
The former governor outlined the inclusive approach he adopted, consulting traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, and community heads, such as leaders of the Fulani and Asa clans. After separate discussions with each group, Matawalle and state security agencies, including the police, army, and civil defence, concluded that dialogue was the best course of action.
“Based on recommendations from the people and traditional rulers, we determined that the most effective solution at the time was to engage in dialogue with the bandits,” Matawalle stated, adding that the initiative yielded positive results.
