Only N4.4bn of N13.1bn Pledged for Maiduguri Flood Victims Currently Available, Says Borno Government
The Borno State Government has announced that only N4.4 billion of the N13.1 billion pledged for the victims of the recent flood in Maiduguri is currently available. This update was provided by Prof. Usman Tar, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, during a briefing at the Borno State Government Flood Disaster Situation Room.
Prof. Tar stated that the available funds have been entrusted to a newly formed Disaster Relief Disbursement Committee, composed of individuals of high integrity from various sectors, including federal and state agencies, traditional and religious leaders, and representatives from military and law enforcement bodies.
“This morning, the governor launched cash support for the first batch of households as part of the rebuilding efforts,” Tar noted. He emphasized that victims who have received food items and cash support to sustain them for two weeks can expect additional assistance soon.
Addressing concerns about the status of flood victims, the commissioner clarified that many individuals who received aid in the camps have chosen to return home, contrary to claims that they were forced to leave. “No one was compelled to leave the camps; those who felt ready to return home were free to do so as the floodwaters have receded in most areas,” he explained.
Tar also indicated plans to consolidate some camps, noting that approximately 40 percent are situated in schools. This consolidation aims to facilitate the resumption of classes for students by relocating those in school facilities to other less populated camps.
Furthermore, he highlighted that some victims opted not to seek refuge in camps and are currently sleeping in streets, filling stations, and private premises. The government has initiated a registration process to provide support to these individuals and is encouraging them to move to designated camps, such as Gubio and Dalori.
The commissioner urged the public to remain patient and supportive of government efforts and its partners as they work to alleviate the suffering of the flood victims. Various organizations and individuals continue to contribute funds to assist the one million people affected by the devastating flood that struck Maiduguri on September 10, which destroyed thousands of buildings.
