Why I Can’t Facilitate Your Return, CNA Explains to Senator Natasha
Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, has stated that only a fresh resolution by the Senate or an express court order can determine Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return to legislative duties following the expiration of her six-month suspension.
The clarification came after threats of legal and disciplinary action were directed at the Clerk’s office by the senator’s lawyers, M. J. Numa & Partners LLP. The National Assembly emphasized that the Clerk does not have the authority to alter any resolution passed by the Senate.
According to the statement issued by the National Assembly’s Director of Information, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, the office of the Clerk serves strictly in an administrative capacity, providing support to the Senate in line with its resolutions, Standing Orders, and the Constitution. The Clerk’s office cannot review, reverse, or interpret Senate decisions.
On March 6, 2025, the Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months. Although the suspension was challenged in court, the Federal High Court did not overturn the resolution, and no binding order has been issued to modify the suspension.
On September 4, 2025, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan notified the Clerk’s office of her intention to resume her duties. The office relayed the message to Senate leadership, which noted that the matter is still before the Court of Appeal and any change in her status would require either a fresh Senate resolution or a definitive court order.
The Clerk’s office described the threats from the senator’s legal team as “misplaced,” emphasizing that all actions taken were within lawful administrative limits and in accordance with due process. The statement reiterated that only the Senate or the courts have the authority to determine whether Akpoti-Uduaghan can resume her legislative functions.
The National Assembly urged the public to remain patient and allow constitutional institutions to discharge their responsibilities.
