Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Reacts as Abuja Court Strikes Out FG’s Criminal Charges Against Her

An Abuja High Court has formally struck out criminal charges brought by the Federal Government against Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, ending a high-profile legal case that drew national attention.

The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation filed a Notice of Discontinuance, prompting the court to terminate the prosecution of criminal defamation and related charges linked to statements the senator allegedly made during a televised interview. The notice, dated December 12, 2025, concluded proceedings in suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025.

Presiding over the matter, Justice C. N. Oji accepted the notice and formally struck out the case, emphasizing the need for caution in exercising prosecutorial powers. He said the decision could foster restraint, reconciliation, and respect for the rule of law within Nigeria’s democratic framework.

Counsel to the Federal Government confirmed the withdrawal, noting that the move was taken in the interest of justice and public confidence in the legal system.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described the outcome as a vindication of her position. “Today’s outcome affirms my belief in the rule of law. I remain committed to serving my constituents and defending the democratic rights of all Nigerians,” she said, acknowledging the support of her legal team, constituents, and well-wishers.

The case had sparked widespread public debate over freedom of expression, political accountability, and the limits of prosecutorial authority in Nigeria, with civil society organizations and rights groups previously criticizing the prosecution as a potential threat to democratic engagement.
