Rivers Assembly Reconvenes After Six-Month Suspension

 

The Rivers State House of Assembly will reconvene on Thursday at 10 a.m. for its first plenary session since the end of the six-month suspension that halted legislative activities in the state. Speaker Martin Amaewhule will preside over the sitting at the Conference Hall of the Legislative Quarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt, where lawmakers have been meeting temporarily.

 

This follows President Bola Tinubu’s announcement on Wednesday lifting the state of emergency, restoring democratic governance, and reinstating Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and previously suspended Assembly members. The move ended months of direct federal control that had placed Rivers State under extraordinary political tension.

 

Thursday’s sitting is expected to set the tone for the Assembly’s legislative direction as governance resumes in full. Observers say it could also indicate whether lawmakers are prepared to pursue reconciliation and stability after the prolonged political crisis. Many see the return of the Assembly as a crucial step toward rebuilding normalcy and steering the state away from the disruptions of the past six months.
