JUST IN: Rivers Court Stops Impeachment Process Against Fubara
A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area has issued an interim injunction stopping steps connected to the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
In a ruling delivered on Friday, Justice F.A. Fiberesima restrained the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, the Clerk of the House, and other defendants from sending any correspondence to the Chief Judge of the state relating to impeachment proceedings.
The court also barred the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, from receiving, processing, or acting on any request, resolution, or articles of impeachment from the defendants for the purpose of constituting a panel to investigate allegations of misconduct against the governor and his deputy for a period of seven days.
The ruling followed a motion ex parte filed separately by Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu in Suit Nos. OYHC/7CS/2026 and OYHC/6/CS/2026. Justice Fiberesima granted permission for the interim orders and originating processes to be served on the first to 31st defendants at the gate of the Rivers State Assembly quarters. The court further directed that service on the 32nd defendant, the Chief Judge, be effected through any judicial staff at his chambers within the High Court premises.
The matter was adjourned to January 23, 2026, for hearing of the substantive motion.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday resolved to proceed with impeachment actions against the governor and his deputy. Four lawmakers who had earlier withdrawn from the process also reversed their decision, accusing Governor Fubara of refusing to yield to dialogue.
