What I’ll Do as New PDP National Chairman — Turaki
Kabiru Turaki has outlined his vision for the Peoples Democratic Party after securing a sweeping victory to emerge as the party’s new National Chairman. Declared winner at the PDP’s 2025 elective national convention in Ibadan, Turaki polled 1,516 votes, far ahead of his closest contender, Garuba Lado, who garnered 41.
In his acceptance speech, Turaki pledged to reposition the party by ending internal practices he described as impunity and suppression of members’ collective will. He assured delegates that the overwhelming confidence placed in the new executives would be met with accountability and transparent leadership.
Turaki emphasized that the party would operate on the principles of fairness, equity and justice, adding that the new leadership would maintain an open-door policy to rebuild trust. He promised that members’ voices would drive key decisions, saying the leadership would stay attentive to grassroots concerns and reflect them in party actions.
Addressing the challenges confronting the PDP, Turaki said the party was at a decisive moment that required unity and renewed commitment. He announced that one of the first tasks of the new executives would be to reach out to aggrieved members. According to him, genuine reconciliation is vital to stabilizing the party and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
He urged those who had left or grown disillusioned to return, stressing that the PDP must present a united front to “save the country’s democracy from imminent collapse.” Turaki added that the new team intends to restore credibility and rebuild the party’s internal structures to prepare it for future political battles.
With his election concluded, Turaki steps into his new role with expectations from party members and observers that his promises of reform and inclusiveness will shape the next phase of the PDP’s evolution.
