“We’re Sorry”: Shettima Apologizes for Sokoto Villagers’ Deaths in Airstrike
Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed condolences to the people and government of Sokoto State following the deaths of about 10 civilians in an airstrike targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities of Silame Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred on December 25, 2024, also left several others injured.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President conveyed deep sympathy to the families affected by the military operation. He described the civilian casualties as a tragic and rare occurrence in the ongoing fight against terror. Shettima emphasized the sacrifices of the Armed Forces, who risk their lives to protect civilians, and called for understanding during such difficult times.
“I extend my deep sympathies to the Government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the families of those who lost their lives in the joint air and land operation by Operation Fansan Yamma targeting Lakurawa terrorist groups in Silame. We are deeply sorry for the civilian casualties incurred and the immense pain caused by this incident,” Shettima said.
He further urged citizens to continue supporting the military by providing useful information to ensure precision in future operations. Shettima expressed the administration’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and restoring peace, assuring Nigerians that the government would leave no stone unturned in achieving this goal.
“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologize for this great loss. The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains resolute in its efforts to eliminate the remnants of terror elements. We are determined to ensure a peaceful Nigeria where everyone can live without fear of attacks,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Vice President led a delegation to Jigawa State on Saturday to commiserate with Governor Umar Namadi over the passing of his mother, Hajiya Mariam Namadi, and his eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi, within 24 hours of each other. Accompanied by Governor Babagana Zulum, Deputy Chief of Staff Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, and other officials, Shettima emphasized the inevitability of death and urged the bereaved to find solace in faith.
“We are all from Allah and will return to Him. Our deeds in this world are our only baggage,” Shettima noted during the visit to Hadejia, Jigawa State.
