Fubara Prevented Wike From Turning Rivers Into a Personal Estate, Says Odili
Peter Odili, former governor of Rivers State, has credited Siminalayi Fubara, the current governor, with preventing Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, from turning the state into his personal domain.
Speaking at an event organized by the Odili family in Port Harcourt, Odili commended Fubara for his resilience and leadership during a challenging period. The gathering was held to honor the Rivers governor and brought together political leaders and stakeholders.
Odili, who led the state from 1999 to 2007, praised Fubara for his steadfastness in navigating a political battle over the state’s future. He highlighted how Fubara, since assuming office, has maintained governance stability and improved the welfare of civil servants and residents.
In a statement released by Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara’s chief press secretary, Odili reflected on the political tensions that began in October 2023. He described them as an unnecessary struggle for control of the state. Despite this, Fubara, according to Odili, successfully resisted the efforts of “one man” to dominate the state, ensuring that the government remained focused on serving the people.
Mary Odili, a former Supreme Court justice and Peter Odili’s wife, reaffirmed her family’s support for Fubara’s administration, expressing optimism about the state’s continued progress under his leadership.
The political rivalry between Fubara and Wike has been ongoing since December 2023. In April 2024, Odili publicly declared Fubara the political leader of Rivers, a move that strained his relationship with Wike, who had previously viewed Odili as a mentor.
Addressing the gathering, Fubara expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the people of Rivers. He emphasized that his strength stems from the collective efforts of his supporters, crediting them for standing by him during challenging times.
Fubara also underscored his commitment to good governance, pledging to run an administration focused on uplifting the state’s image while remaining accountable. He expressed faith in divine guidance, assuring attendees that his leadership would prioritize the well-being of Rivers residents.
“We will not be tyrants,” Fubara said. “We will remember that what we are doing here today is a shift job and that one day, our time will be up, and we will leave for another person to takeover.”
