We Won’t Protest Against Tinubu’s Government; We Will Meet and Discuss with the President,” Say Gospel Ministers
The National President of the Congress of Nigerian Gospel Ministers Incorporated, His Eminence Most Rev. Prof. Philip Okpanwa Akam, has announced that his members will not partake in the nationwide protest against hunger and economic hardship scheduled for August 2024.
Addressing journalists following a meeting with the Anambra State Chapter of the Congress on July 19, 2024, Prof. Akam emphasized that his members, who he describes as dedicated and law-abiding ministers, have no sufficient reason to engage in the protest against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Prof. Akam, also the Primate of Christ The Light Gospel Mission Incorporated, stressed that rather than participating in the protest, the Congress advocates for direct dialogue with the President. He suggested that a constructive discussion with Tinubu could address both commendable aspects of his leadership and areas needing improvement, ultimately benefiting the nation as it grapples with economic difficulties.
The Primate expressed dissatisfaction with the Nigerian government’s treatment of genuine church organizations, highlighting a perceived lack of engagement with such groups since their establishment. He criticized the government’s failure to involve churches in addressing national issues, despite Nigeria’s abundant natural resources.
“A Church’s role is to promote peace and spiritual well-being in society,” said Prof. Akam. “We believe that meeting with the President directly will be more effective in addressing the nation’s challenges.”
The National President also urged the Congress leadership in Anambra to continue praying for peace and unity across the region and the country.
