Jittery Presidency Claims: “Peter Obi’s Supporters Planning Nationwide Mayhem—Obi Must Be Held Responsible”
In a recent statement, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, an aide to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, revealed concerns over planned nationwide protests, alleging that supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, are behind these disturbances. The presidency has expressed apprehension that these protests could lead to widespread chaos and has urged that Obi be held accountable for any resultant anarchy.
Onanuga’s statement, posted on X, accuses Obi’s supporters of orchestrating unrest similar to the ENDSARS protests of October 2020, which initially addressed police brutality but were later hijacked by elements with separatist agendas. The presidency claims these same supporters have now adopted slogans like ‘EndBadGovernance,’ ‘Tinubu Must Go,’ and ‘Revolution2024,’ viewing them as calls for treason and an unconstitutional coup.
Further scrutiny reveals that an anonymous figure operating an internet radio station, PTM100.88 Abuja, has been mobilizing supporters through provocative content, including disparaging posts about Obi’s rivals and calls for civil unrest. This figure is reportedly linked to other prominent voices in the protest movement, including disgruntled politicians and individuals with controversial backgrounds.
Onanuga highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to address economic challenges, including significant wage increases, student loans, and palliative measures. He asserted that these initiatives reflect the administration’s commitment to improving living conditions and urged citizens to reconsider joining protests driven by Obi’s supporters.
The statement concludes by calling for patience until the next election cycle in 2027, urging that democratic processes be respected and any grievances addressed through established political channels.
