“We No Longer Have Confidence in Him,” ADC Leaders Demand INEC Chairman’s Resignation

Leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, citing a loss of confidence in the electoral body’s leadership.

The demand was made on Thursday in Abuja during a press briefing addressed by former Senate President David Mark, who spoke on behalf of the party’s leadership.

According to Mark, the ADC believes the INEC leadership has shown bias in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), raising concerns about its ability to conduct credible elections in 2027.

He stated that both the chairman and national commissioners of INEC should either resign or be removed, arguing that the commission, as currently constituted, cannot be trusted to oversee a fair electoral process.

Mark also addressed the party’s position following INEC’s recent derecognition of the ADC. He said the party would continue its activities, maintaining that there is no legal requirement for INEC to be present at its internal programmes, provided proper notice has been given.

The ADC further called on the international community to monitor developments, warning that recent actions by the electoral body could undermine democratic stability in Nigeria.

In addition, the party urged citizens to remain engaged and vigilant, describing the current situation as critical to the country’s democratic future.
