Violence Breaks Out as Cote d’Ivoire Faces Humiliating Defeat in AFCON 2023
Pandemonium on the streets of Abidjan as enraged supporters of the host nation, Cote d’Ivoire, unleashed violence following the team’s humiliating 4-0 defeat against Equatorial Guinea in their final group game on Monday during the AFCON 2023.
The aftermath of the loss witnessed a vandalized bus, depicted in a video circulating on social media. The bus, seemingly abandoned due to the outbreak of violence, bore the scars of an attack, with visible holes that suggested it had been pelted with stones. The situation escalated further as the windows of the bus were shattered in the rampage.
Footage capturing the chaos reveal scenes of items set ablaze in the streets of Abidjan. The unsettling visuals prompted a swift response from law enforcement, with police converging on the affected area to restore order.
In a WhatsApp group for reporters covering the 2023 AFCON, a Nigerian journalist shared a harrowing account of the situation, stating, “Had to run for cover after escaping on the bus…and hide my journalist tag.”
The shocking defeat has left Cote d’Ivoire with a precarious position in the tournament, diminishing their chances of advancing to the knockout phase. Currently holding three points and a negative three-goal difference, the Ivorians now face the daunting task of relying on fewer than four teams surpassing their group stage performance to secure a spot among the four third-best-placed teams advancing.
Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria have already secured the two automatic qualification tickets to the round of 16 from Group A, leaving Cote d’Ivoire in a precarious position as they await the tournament’s next crucial developments.
