Ghana’s Heartbreak as AFCON Exit Looms: Two-Goal Lead Slips Away in Stoppage Time

Ghana’s Black Stars find themselves teetering on the edge of elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations. Despite holding a two-goal lead in stoppage time, Ghana squandered their advantage, settling for a draw against Mozambique in their final Group B match.

The dramatic encounter saw Jordan Ayew secure an early lead for Ghana with a penalty just 15 minutes into the game, doubling the scoreline from the spot again in the 70th minute. However, the tides turned drastically in the dying moments of the match.

Mozambique’s Geny Catamo initiated the comeback, converting a penalty to pull a goal back before Reinildo sealed the deal with Mozambique’s second goal. The shocking turn of events left Ghana finishing third in the group with two points, tied with Mozambique but securing advancement due to a superior goal difference.

Meanwhile, Cape Verde and Egypt played an enthralling 2-2 draw in the second Group B match. Gilson Tavares gave Cape Verde the lead just before halftime, but Trezeguet equalized for Egypt in the early stages of the second half.

In the 90th minute, Mostafa Mohamed propelled Egypt ahead, only for Cape Verde’s relentless spirit to shine through as Bryan Teixeira secured a late equalizer. Cape Verde clinched the top spot in the group with seven points, comfortably ahead of second-placed Egypt by four points.

As Cape Verde and Egypt celebrate their advancement to the next phase of the competition, Ghana is left grappling with the bitter taste of missed opportunities, facing the looming threat of an untimely AFCON exit.
