Power Outages Sweep Côte d’Ivoire Cities Following AFCON Defeat

In the aftermath of Côte d’Ivoire’s stunning 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), widespread power outages have been reported across major cities of the host country.

Confirming the unusual situation, Nigerian journalists covering the event in West Africa suggested a potential link between the power disruptions and the host country’s disappointing defeat on Monday night.

Speaking to Channels Television on Tuesday, Nigerian sports journalist Suleiman Adebayo stated, “It is real. There is a power outage in Ivory Coast. Maybe it is a coincidence, I don’t know. Of course, they lost yesterday, in a very bad way against Equatorial Guinea. This is the first time in a long time, or since we have been here, that there would be a power outage for the past five to six hours. The last time we experienced a power outage was like for two minutes. But this time, maybe because of the loss. It is clear yesterday… destruction of buses, and hostility in the city of Abidjan. Waking up this morning and realized there had not been light for the past five to six hours. Maybe it is a coincidence.”

Adding to the observations, sports journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel highlighted the severity of the situation in Abidjan, saying, “Power outrage for over six hours in Abidjan. Heat wan kill us overnight. Zero option, No generator and solar. No be us be Equatorial Guinea now.”

The power outages come amid heightened emotions and tensions following the AFCON defeat, with reports of unrest in the city of Abidjan, including destruction of buses and increased hostility. The connection between the power disruptions and the football loss raises questions about the broader impact of sports outcomes on societal dynamics.
