AFCON 2023: FG fulfils reward pledge to Super Eagles
The Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled its pledge of housing and land rewards to the Super Eagles following the team’s performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
The Super Eagles finished as runners-up at the tournament, which was held in 2024, after a 2–1 defeat to the host nation in the final. On their return to Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu received the players at the Presidential Villa, where he conferred the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) on each member of the squad.
In addition to the national honours, the president approved the allocation of a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a residential flat for every player in recognition of their achievement.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the promises have now been fulfilled, with players receiving certificates for the allocated land and housing. According to the federation, the documents were presented to the team at their camp in Fez, Morocco, on Monday.
The certification ceremony comes as the Super Eagles prepare for the start of their 2025 AFCON campaign. Nigeria will open the tournament on Tuesday against Tanzania, before facing Tunisia on December 27 and Uganda three days later in their final group match.
