Nigeria to Play Cameroon in AFCON Round of 16 Matchup
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon secured their place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) round of 16 by defeating Gambia 3-2 in a closely contested match at the Stade de Bouaké. Karl Toko Ekambi’s early second-half header set the pace for Cameroon, but Gambia responded with two goals from Ablie Jallow and Ebrima Colley. The Lions staged a late comeback, leveling the scoreline in the 87th minute and sealing the victory with a stoppage-time header from Cristopher Wooh.
Cameroon, finishing second in Group C with four points, will now face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a highly anticipated clash on January 27 at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. Nigeria secured their spot in the round of 16 by finishing second in Group A, drawing with Equatorial Guinea and defeating Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau to accumulate seven points.
The upcoming match reignites a historic football rivalry between the neighboring countries, with Nigeria holding the upper hand in their head-to-head record, boasting 12 wins and 8 draws in 25 encounters. The last AFCON meeting between these teams was in the 2019 edition’s second round, where Nigeria emerged victorious with a 3-2 win en route to claiming the bronze in the competition. Football enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating another captivating episode of this intense rivalry on the AFCON stage.
