Video: Awkward Moment in the Senate as Lawmakers Refuse to Second Senator Natasha’s Motion
There was an awkward moment in the Senate on Tuesday as lawmakers initially refused to second a motion moved by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling for the repatriation of Nigerian women reportedly abused in Libyan prisons.
The Kogi Central lawmaker, representing the Peoples Democratic Party, highlighted the plight of Nigerian women allegedly subjected to sexual exploitation and forced pregnancies while detained in Libya. She urged the Senate to direct the Nigerian Immigration Service to liaise with Libyan authorities to ensure their safe return.
After Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan presented her motion, Senate President Godswill Akpabio asked if any lawmaker would second it—a procedural requirement for debate to proceed. No senator immediately responded, creating an awkward pause in the chamber, including among female lawmakers.
The silence was eventually broken when Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele stood to second the motion, allowing the Senate to continue discussions on the issue.
