“Anioma State Will Be Created, With Asaba as Capital” — Godswill Akpabio
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reiterated political and legislative backing for the proposed creation of Anioma State, stating that the new state would have Asaba as its capital.
Akpabio made the remarks on Wednesday during the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress held in Asaba, Delta State. He said the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to the initiative.
According to Akpabio, the restructuring would result in the division of the current Delta State into two entities. He noted that Warri is expected to serve as the capital of the reconfigured Delta State, citing its existing infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, government institutions, and the presence of major oil companies.
The senate president described the agitation for Anioma State as a long-standing demand grounded in considerations of equity, administrative convenience, and regional development.
He also acknowledged the role of Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North in the Senate, in advancing the proposal. Akpabio said the initiative remains a priority for the 10th Senate and continues to receive legislative attention.
Governors from across the South-South region, including those of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River states, attended the congress alongside party stakeholders.
Akpabio said the proposed state creation would enhance decentralisation and unlock socio-economic opportunities across the region. He also called for unity among stakeholders and urged continued support for the federal government’s development agenda.
In November 2025, Nwoko disclosed that the proposal had gained traction, noting support from constitutional amendment committees and a significant number of senators.
