US, UK, Canada Issue Security Alerts for Nationals in Nigeria Amid Upcoming Protest
The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada have each issued security alerts to their citizens in Nigeria, citing concerns over potential violence during the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled for August 1, 2024.
In their respective travel advisories, the three countries have urged their nationals to avoid areas where confrontations between security forces and protesters might occur, drawing on historical precedents of similar unrest.
The advisories come as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), faces mounting pressure from Nigerians planning to demonstrate against perceived governmental failures. With widespread discontent simmering, the possibility of clashes with the Federal Government looms large.
Emergency meetings involving high-level officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the National Security Adviser, security chiefs, state governors, and APC leaders, highlight the government’s apprehension about the protests.
Organizers under the #EndBadGovernance banner have mobilized youth and civil society groups to protest against economic hardships and alleged failures of Tinubu’s administration.
The US Mission in Abuja advised Americans to avoid rallies and large gatherings, citing risks of roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic issues, and potential physical confrontations. The advisory noted, “Nationwide protests are anticipated between July 29 and August 5, 2024. Previous events suggest that these protests may include roadblocks and confrontations.”
The UK High Commission similarly warned British nationals to exercise caution and avoid major cities like Abuja and Lagos from July 29 to August 10. The advisory highlighted the potential for sudden and violent demonstrations, urging citizens to avoid large crowds and seek safety if encountering threatening situations.
Canada’s government also issued a warning about the planned demonstrations, advising citizens to expect disruptions in traffic and public transportation, and to remain vigilant. The advisory cautioned that protests could become violent unexpectedly and urged adherence to local authorities’ instructions.
These alerts reflect heightened international concern over the planned protests and their possible impact on safety and security in Nigeria.
