US Boosts Nigeria’s Counterterrorism Efforts with Military Supplies
The United States has delivered military supplies to Nigeria to support the country’s ongoing security operations, reinforcing bilateral cooperation against terrorism and other security threats.
The delivery was confirmed by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in a statement posted on its verified X account on Tuesday. According to AFRICOM, the supplies were handed over to Nigerian authorities in Abuja.
The command said the move reflects Washington’s continued commitment to strengthening its security partnership with Nigeria.
“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasises our shared security partnership,” AFRICOM stated, while tagging the United States Mission in Nigeria.
The latest support comes amid sustained collaboration between Nigeria and its international partners to improve capacity in tackling terrorism and violent extremism across the country.
In November 2025, the Bola Tinubu-led presidency formally appealed to the United States for deeper military assistance in combating terrorism in parts of Nigeria. The appeal was disclosed by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, during discussions around the United States’ designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”
Following the request, Nigerian and United States forces carried out a joint airstrike on December 25, 2025, targeting terrorist locations in the North West.
The Federal Government later confirmed that security and intelligence cooperation with the United States remains ongoing. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the engagement includes intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and other forms of support conducted in line with international law and with respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Reacting to the airstrikes, US Congressman Riley Moore described the operation as a decisive step toward addressing the security crisis and protecting vulnerable communities.
