UNIPORT Student Sets Lover Ablaze Over Pregnancy Dispute
A 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, identified as Cynthia Chukwundah, has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command for allegedly setting her lover, 32-year-old Sunny Amadi, ablaze during a domestic dispute. The incident occurred at a private residence on Okoro Street in Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, on Sunday.
According to reports, the disagreement between the two escalated into a violent confrontation allegedly centered around a pregnancy dispute. During the altercation, Chukwundah reportedly doused Amadi with a flammable substance and set him on fire. He was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) with severe burns but later died from his injuries while receiving treatment.
The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Port Harcourt. She noted that police detectives from the Choba Division responded promptly upon receiving the report and visited both the scene and the hospital where the victim was being treated.
Chukwundah, who also sustained burns during the fire, is currently receiving medical care at an undisclosed hospital under police surveillance. She is said to be heavily pregnant with the deceased’s child and has been unable to give a full statement due to her condition.
Iringe-Koko stated that the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy. She added that the State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has called for calm and assured the public that justice will be served.
