UNIJOS Student Dies After Injuries Sustained in Plateau Attack
Abel Gershon, a 300-level Building student at University of Jos, has died following injuries he sustained during a recent attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North.
Gershon was among victims of the March 29 assault, when suspected bandits opened fire at a bar in the community, killing at least 28 people and leaving several others injured. The incident triggered widespread outrage and led the Plateau State government to impose a 48-hour curfew in the affected area.
State authorities, including Governor Caleb Mutfwang, condemned the attack, describing it as unprovoked.
University officials had earlier confirmed Gershon as one of two students who survived the attack and were receiving treatment at the institution’s teaching hospital. He remained in intensive care until his death on Sunday night.
Emmanuel Madugu, the university’s deputy registrar for information and public relations, confirmed the development, stating that the institution would initiate contact with the deceased’s family.
Student union president Younglan Tongpus also verified the death, noting that Gershon had been on life support since the incident. He added that arrangements were being made to notify the family and begin burial plans.
Tongpus further disclosed that another victim of the attack, an elderly man who had also been in intensive care, died the same day.
The killing comes amid heightened security concerns around the university community. In recent days, another student, Adeyemo Temitope, was reported dead after an unrelated attack near campus.
In response to the deteriorating situation, the university has suspended examinations and ordered students to vacate hostels temporarily, citing safety concerns.
