Maintenance work uncovers baby’s remains in UniJos female hostel drainage system
A routine maintenance exercise at the University of Jos in Jos led to the discovery of the remains of an infant inside a drainage system connected to a female hostel on campus.
The incident occurred on Friday in the Naraguta area of the institution when students reported a blocked sewage line accompanied by an unpleasant odour. Maintenance personnel were called in to address the fault and restore the affected facility.
During the inspection and repair process, plumbers opened sections of the drainage system to identify the source of the blockage. It was at this point that they came across the remains lodged within the pipe.
A staff member in the hostel, who requested anonymity, said the condition of the remains suggested they had been disposed of through a toilet connected to the drainage system. The staff member added that the discovery raised concerns among those present during the repair work.
Students in the hostel expressed unease following the incident, with several questioning how such a situation could occur within the residential environment. Some called for a formal inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the case and identify those involved.
The management of the University of Jos had not released an official statement as of the time of filing this report. Efforts to obtain comment from the institution’s public relations office were unsuccessful.
