Eight UNIJOS Students Killed in Early-Morning Crash in Jos
Eight students from the University of Jos lost their lives in a road accident in Jos, the Plateau State capital, after returning from an outing in the early hours of Thursday. The crash occurred around 2 a.m. opposite Unity Bank along Zaria Road.
The Plateau Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident through its Public Education Officer, SRC Peter Longsan, who said officials received a distress call at about 2:30 a.m. The collision involved a trailer and a bus carrying eleven students.
According to Longsan, seven students were found dead at the scene and later certified by medical personnel. One more victim died in the hospital, bringing the total to eight, while three others are currently receiving treatment. All the victims were male.
An eyewitness reported that the bus was traveling at high speed and attempted a wrongful overtaking, resulting in the driver losing control before the crash. The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Plateau, Corps Commander Olajide Mogaji, urged motorists—especially commercial drivers—to avoid night journeys, speeding and driving while fatigued, noting that these factors often turn crashes into fatal incidents.
