UNIBEN Pharmacy Graduates Shine on Global Stage, Secure Second Place in Bechangemaker Competition
In a stunning display of talent and innovation, two recent pharmacy graduates from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Pharms. (Dr) Chioma Favour Uzoma and Pharms. (Dr) Favour Oluwatobi Ogedegbe, have achieved second place in the global Bechangemaker social entrepreneurship competition. Their groundbreaking startup, Medvax Health, has taken the world by storm as it tackles the critical issue of counterfeit and substandard medications in Africa.
Competing against 569 startups from 86 countries, including powerhouses like the USA, Morocco, and Colombia, these young entrepreneurs from Nigeria showcased their Medvax Health initiative. This health tech startup, driven by AI technology, outshone the competition during the intense competition held in Dublin, Ireland.
Their journey to success began with three months of rigorous training and two competitive online rounds. As the only African team out of 11 from the continent to advance to the second phase of the competition, they secured a place among the top 5 global finalists. Their hard work paid off as they earned the opportunity to pitch live at the Worldskills General Assembly in Dublin.
At this prestigious event, they captivated a diverse audience, including social investors, government officials, and partners from Worldskills and the HP Foundation. Their exceptional performance resulted in the duo receiving a seed grant, which will provide essential support to kickstart their operations in Nigeria.
Medvax Health is on a mission to make a significant impact by addressing the critical issue of counterfeit medications in Africa’s pharmaceutical supply chain. This innovation has the potential to save countless lives, as over half a million sub-Saharan Africans fall victim to counterfeit medications annually.
In a statement issued in Benin, Edo State, these young entrepreneurs expressed their pride as Nigerians and emphasized their commitment to putting their country on the global map. They encourage fellow Nigerian youths to pursue their passions and strive for excellence, urging them to contribute to positive change. Additionally, they call on the government to support young entrepreneurs who are developing innovative solutions across various sectors.
The achievement of Pharms. (Dr) Chioma Favour Uzoma and Pharms. (Dr) Favour Oluwatobi Ogedegbe serves as an inspiring example of the incredible talent and potential that exists within Nigeria and the University of Benin. Their remarkable success in the Bechangemaker competition has brought global recognition to their innovative solution, Medvax Health, and their dedication to making a difference in the world.
