Building Collapse Traps UNIBEN Students Amid Heavy Rain
Early Saturday morning, a storey building on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, Benin City, has collapsed, trapping numerous students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN). The collapse occurred following a heavy downpour in the area, which is known for its concentration of student housing.
According to Sahara Reporters, rescue operations are currently underway. A student who wished to remain anonymous reported that while some trapped individuals have been rescued by the university’s rescue team, several others have sustained serious injuries. These injured victims have been swiftly transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Efforts are ongoing to locate one student who remains unaccounted for, with reports indicating that the victim has called for help from within the debris. The rescue team is working diligently to find and assist this individual.
The Dean of Students at UNIBEN is at the scene, actively coordinating the rescue efforts with the university’s team. As of now, the university management has not provided an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the total number of those affected.
