UNIBEN CONUA Distances Itself from NLC Strike, Labels It a Unilateral Decision
University of Benin’s Congress Of Nigeria University Academics (CONUA) has declared its non-participation in the ongoing strike led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State. The UNIBEN chapter of CONUA emphasized its commitment to an uninterrupted academic calendar and distanced itself from what it described as a unilateral decision.
Comrade Ishaq Osagie-Eweka, the Chairman of UNIBEN CONUA, asserted that the strike was a one-man decision and reiterated that CONUA is not affiliated with the NLC. Speaking to journalists, Osagie-Eweka urged members to focus on their duties for the collective benefit of the students.
He stated, “On behalf of CONUA members, UNIBEN Chapter, I wish to unequivocally state that we are not an affiliate of the NLC, hence, we are not part of the protest. As a chapter, we shall not make any public statement regarding the sudden strike arising from one man’s decision.”
Osagie-Eweka highlighted the alignment of the university administration under the Vice Chancellor with CONUA’s goal of maintaining a smooth and uninterrupted academic calendar.
In the broader context, the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) strike has significantly impacted government offices and banks in the state, leading to the paralysis of activities in ministries and agencies. Comrade Odion Olaye, the state chairman of NLC, cited the maltreatment of its president as a key reason for the strike, expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s response.
Comrade Precious Alabi of the TUC added, “the strike action was necessitated by the assault on the NLC president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and the failure of the government to honour the agreement reached with both unions when the fuel subsidy was removed.”
Despite the widespread strike, UNIBEN CONUA remains steadfast in its commitment to the students’ academic interests and distances itself from the broader protest led by the NLC.
