Undeterred by Accusations: Worshippers Declare Unshakeable Loyalty to T.B. Joshua
In response to a recent three-part documentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) alleging physical abuse, manipulation, and other grave misconduct by the late founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua (T.B. Joshua), worshippers remain resolute in their loyalty.
The documentary, released on January 8, included accusations of fake miracles, sexual assault, and forced abortions. Despite the shocking revelations, followers in the Ikotun-Egbe area of Lagos State, where the church is situated, continue with their routines as if oblivious to the controversies surrounding the deceased prophet.
Commercial activities thrive in the vicinity, with shops operating normally and residents going about their daily lives. Large photos of T.B. Joshua and his wife adorn T.B. Joshua Street leading to the church, and worshippers are seen praying fervently in front of these images.
While the documentary generated significant reactions on social media, the area seems unaffected, and adherents of T.B. Joshua’s doctrine express unwavering commitment. The church, known for its Sunday services, sees an influx of over 50,000 weekly visitors, and data from the Nigeria Immigration Service highlights SCOAN’s popularity among foreign travelers.
Despite the allegations, services continue, with only church workers entering and leaving the premises. Accommodations are provided at competitive rates, ranging from $800 for shared bunks to $15,000 for VIP rooms per week.
The BBC documentary has not deterred worshippers seeking miracles, as evidenced by the continuous arrival of people hoping for solutions to their problems. The President of Pilgrims Hostels Association of Nigeria, Ikotun, Adedayo Adekanbi, predicts increased patronage despite the slow pace since T.B. Joshua’s death.
Some worshippers, like Mrs. Folasade, proudly display their allegiance, emphasizing that allegations won’t affect their belief in T.B. Joshua’s teachings. Others dismiss the accusers as jealous and emphasize the late prophet’s generosity, recalling instances of financial assistance and scholarship programs.
While the SCOAN Public Affairs Director, Dare Adejumo, states that the church has not officially commented on the allegations, the worshippers remain steadfast, and commercial establishments in the area see the controversy as “good business.” Despite varied reactions, the Synagogue Church of All Nations appears to stand firm in the face of the recent challenges.
