LASEPA Raises Concerns Over ‘Ponmo’ Production Impacting Air Quality in Lagos

In an urgent alert, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has urged residents to curtail the consumption of ‘ponmo’ (animal skin) due to its adverse effects on air quality in the state.

Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, highlighted the environmental repercussions of burning cow skin, emphasizing the release of harmful carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The agency’s air quality index data revealed alarming readings in Iba town, UNILAG research lab, and Lamata Ketu, indicating highly unhealthy air conditions.

Ajayi, in an interview with the Punch, stressed the impact of agricultural activities on air quality, specifically mentioning areas engaged in processing hides and skins. He also underscored the significant contribution of vehicular emissions to the air pollution crisis in various parts of Lagos.

“The burning of cow skin in Agege would account for a huge amount of carbon emissions. So, if you like ponmo, you are causing a major problem to the air quality of Lagos,” cautioned Ajayi.

Highlighting the prevalence of industries in different regions of Lagos, Ajayi identified industrial emissions as another significant factor deteriorating air quality. He called upon homeowners to contribute to mitigating the issue by planting trees, emphasizing their role in absorbing emitted carbon and enhancing overall air quality.

This advisory from LASEPA serves as a critical call to action for residents to be cautious about their consumption choices and take proactive measures to address the escalating air quality concerns in Lagos.
